What is Deodorant?

Deodorant is a stick or roll-on heat and moisture-activated odor controller that is designed to kill the bacteria responsible for causing body odor. Deodorants don’t hinder the sweating process, and usually contain some form of fragrance to stop and/or mask odors. Sweat actually has no odor: it’s bacteria that causes the bad smell. The ingredients in deodorant contain substances that neutralize the bacteria so that the reaction of sweat and the bacteria doesn’t raise a stink. Some popular odor-neutralizing ingredients in natural deodorants are baking soda, mineral salts, arrowroot powder, and cornstarch. When you apply deodorant, you still sweat because there is no form of antiperspirant in it. Some people who are used to using antiperspirants find this frustrating, but those who stop using an antiperspirant eventually find that they sweat less because their sweat glands regulate themselves.

What is Antiperspirant?

The word “antiperspirant” seems synonymous with deodorant, but it is completely different. An antiperspirant stops the portion of the body it is applied to from sweating. This sweat-stopping property usually comes in the form of aluminum zirconium or aluminum chloride and is technically considered an over-the-counter drug by the FDA. The aluminum additive actually clogs, closes, or blocks the sweat pores, so when you get hot and sweaty in the summer sun or during a workout, you can’t sweat from your armpits. The FDA considers this action to be a drug because it affects the physiology of the body and hinders a normal bodily function. If you want to check this out for yourself, you can find the Drug Identification Number (DIN) on the back of every stick of antiperspirant in the United States.

There are mixed reviews when it comes to antiperspirant. While some believe it’s the greatest invention since sliced bread, others believe it can be harmful to the body and can be the conduit for certain diseases and forms of cancer.

Choosing to forgo antiperspirant may be frustrating at first. The amount of different products with incredible claims and exciting fragrances may be confusing, but you’ll be sure to find what you need with all of the options.
