Spring is here, and with spring comes allergies! It’s such a bittersweet time, as the flowers and trees are starting to bloom, some of us suffer from and struggle with runny noses, coughing and itchy eyes. At Green Tidings, we feel your pain! With this in mind, in part one of our blog series, we will look at a few all natural ways for you to make allergy season far more manageable.
Keep A Clean Home
While many people believe that the cause of allergies are entirely the work of what’s happening outdoors, this isn’t entirely the case. By not keeping up with the regular cleaning and maintenance indoors, you can very easily be making your allergies worse. With this in mind, it’s best to keep a clean home at all times of the year, most especially during allergy season.
Launder Your Bedding
It’s something that we likely don’t think about much, but our bedding can play a big role in the amount of allergy-related irritation that we experience. Much like floors, furniture and other surfaces, your bedding stays dormant throughout the day, allowing things like dust and other irritations to build up on them, only for us to wrap ourselves in them every night. Our pillows especially can contain a considerable amount of dust, and seeing how we are directly breathing into it for hours each night, it’s important to make sure that our bedding is clean and allergen-free. Laundering your bedding in warm water with a dye-free detergent will ensure that your bedding remains fresh and clean, reducing the amount of allergy-related irritation that you may experience during the nights and mornings.
Avoid Opening Windows and Doors
Opening up the windows and doors of your home to let in a little fresh air is a great way to give your home a sense of cleanliness and vibrancy, but if you’re not careful, you can actually be making your allergies worse. During the earlier parts of the day, pollen levels are much higher than later in the day. By opening your windows or doors between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., you’re not only letting in fresh air, you’re also letting in an array of allergens and pollen. This isn’t to say that you should avoid fresh air entirely, though. If you really want to give your home that fresh and clean feeling, choosing a later time of day to open up your doors or windows will be more advantageous to you. While there will likely be some level of pollen or allergens in the air even at that hour, they’ll be much lower, causing you to feel less irritation than if you were to decide to do so in the early hours of the day. Ideally, if you wait until spring passes, you’ll experience even lower levels of airborne allergens.
